Dollar Stretching Saturday: Magificent Mums

Mums (or, more properly, chrysanthemums) are one of my favorite flowers. Not only are they a cinch to grow, they are green throughout spring and summer and produce colorful, abundant blooms from late summer until late fall. They are always the last flowers of the year to bloom in my garden. Here's a super simple trick to help you get even more from your mums: Any time you trim them back, don't throw the clippings away. Instead, remove about an inch of stems from the bottom of the clippings and stick 'em in a pot of soil. They will quickly establish roots, and you'll get free plants!

This is especially smart to do in the spring, since pruning at that time will make the bushes fuller when they bloom, but you can do it anytime the plant is green.
