Garden Surprises

Whether you're a novice or an expert gardener, God has a way of throwing gardening surprises your way. For example, yesterday I discovered I had acorn squash sprouting. That may not seem surprising, except the seeds came from a grocery store squash and conventional wisdom says those seeds are usually infertile. Too, I winter sowed the seeds - and I thought they'd need much more warmth to sprout.

More surprises were in store when I cleaned up a garden bed in preparation for spring. I don't cut back plants for winter; the birds and other critters like it better that way. So when I cleared away debris, I was surprised to discover some onions.

Last year, several of our tomato plants grew positively enormous. One fell over, shading many of our onions. During the fall harvest, there was no sign of these onion bulbs. And since conventional wisdom says onions won't survive wet winters without rotting, I was delighted to discover a few growing happily in our yard.

God loves giving surprises!
