Weekend Links

Me with my first chicken (and my favorite Easter dress), c. 1980.
In which I share my favorite posts from this blog's Facebook page.

* Sippy cup recall.

* "'The average age of first exposure to hard-core pornography for boys is eleven years old,' he said. 'I’m not talking about seeing a naked woman. I’m talking about three men gang-raping a woman and pulling her hair and spitting on her face.'" (Source.) Protect your children, parents!

* Delayed Kindergarten enrollment decreases the incidence of ADHD, study finds.

* Why one genetic engineer changed his mind about the safety of Round Up. Everyone should read this.

* I never knew you could use nettles to make rennet for cheesemaking!

* Hubby and I were talking over our immediate plans for our new homestead (which we hope to move onto SOON). I feel a little silly that I'm so excited about setting up a laundry line. Last week I was pinning ideas for making myself a clothespin apron, just like my grandma used to wear. This is my favorite.

* Speaking of aprons, did you know I have a Pinterest board full of aprons, aprons, aprons? It includes aprons you can buy, vintage aprons to inspire, and links to tutorials and patterns so you can sew your own. Check it out!

* We were at the Post Office a few days ago, and somebody's order of chicks was waiting, the chicks peep-peeping constantly. I commented on it to the postal employee helping me and she said she felt for those poor, hungry chicks. I was glad to be able to put her straight! First, for up to 72 hours after they hatch, chicks are still digesting their yolk sacs. This keeps them quite full and happy. That is why chickens are only shipped at this tender age. Second, chicks peep constantly because, well, that's what chicks do! They literally peek from the moment they wake up until the moment they suddenly fall asleep.

* A great Scientific American article about whether we're really thinking scientifically or critically.
